2023-04-01 Honoring the Life of Apostle Lawrence G Campbell Sr PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS' RESOLUTION # 2023-04-01 HONORING THE LIFE OF APOSTLE LAWRENCE G.CAMPBELL, SR. VIRGINIA: At the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors' ("Board")Business Meeting on Tuesday,April 18, 2023,the following Resolution was presented and adopted: WHEREAS,Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell,Sr. ("Campbell"), was born on February 3, 1930, in Danville, Virginia, and he was the son of the late George Campbell and Etta Vaughn Campbell McCauley; and WHEREAS,Campbell attended Langston High School,where he received hand-me-down textbooks and football equipment; and WHEREAS, he later married Gloria Williams, and during their seventy-five (75) years of marriage, had five (5) children; and WHEREAS,Campbell was an advocate for equal rights,and his efforts along with others brought Rev. Martin Luther King,Jr. to Danville on four(4) separate occasions to help organize civil rights efforts in the early 1960's; and WHEREAS,Campbell graduated from Averett in 1973 with a degree in psychology; and in January 2019, he received Averett's inaugural President's Service Award; and WHEREAS, he was also a U.S. Navy veteran, and served as the pastor of Bibleway Cathedral in Danville, since he and his wife founded it in 1953; and WHEREAS, he also served as the Chief Apostle and presiding Bishop of the Bibleway Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, leading over three hundred(300) churches in the United States, England, Africa, and the Caribbean from 1998-2006; and WHEREAS, Campbell was a faithful and loyal member of his community and faithfully performed his duties in a diligent and dependable manner; and the Board,the County,and County citizens are honored to have had him as a civil rights icon who was a dedicated fighter for equality and led efforts to bring racial progress to Danville,the County, and surrounding areas. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board expresses its condolences to Campbell's family for their great loss; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED,that the Board directs that a copy of this Resolution be given to Campbell's family.
