RESOLUTION#2023-03-01
HONORING CAPTAIN GEORGE COLEMAN'S RETIREMENT
VIRGINIA: The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors ("Board") adopted the following Resolution at its
Business Meeting on March 21,2023:
WHEREAS, after forty-two (42) years of serving the citizens of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, ("County")
in the Sheriff's Department, Captain George Coleman("Coleman")hung up his badge,retiring at seventy(70)years
old on January 31, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Coleman began his career with the County on June 16, 1980, when he was hired as a Field Deputy;
and
WHEREAS, throughout the years, Coleman moved up the ranks from Deputy to Field Sergeant and Field
Supervisor to Investigator, where he was responsible for looking into various crimes such as murders, rapes, sexual
assault, and crimes involving money; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, Coleman began working in Civil Process, dealing with serving subpoenas, depositions,
evictions, Sheriff sales,and other areas; and
WHEREAS, Coleman assisted with the development of a Crime Scene Unit, as well as the Crimestoppers
Program, and he played a key role in recruiting new deputies for the Sheriffs Department and mentoring them after
they were hired; and
WHEREAS,Coleman believed in taking time with people and has worked to treat others with respect; and
WHEREAS,when Coleman was on the road,he made a point to stop and talk to citizens on their front porches,
in the fields,or at their place of business,where he earned respect from not only those in the County,but from Senators,
Delegates,Judges, Commonwealth Attorneys, and many other prominent people; and
WHEREAS, Coleman was an asset to the County and a loyal member of his community and faithfully
performed his duties in a diligent and dependable manner.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board expresses its sincere appreciation to Coleman for his
forty-two (42) years of service to the County and his dedication of time towards the law enforcement community and
congratulates him on his well-deserved retirement.
