Summer Internship Program - Dr. Julie BrownPITTSYLVANIA COUNTY EXPERIENCEWORKS SERVING MORE YOUTH AT A HIGHER LEVEL 2022 Presented to the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors February 15, 2022 COLLABORATION Each member of the collaborative team brings an important skill set and bank of resources to the youth career experience. This partnership includes the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research, Pittsylvania County Community Action, and Pittsylvania County Schools. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY EXPERIENCEWORKS 2022 SUMMARY We utilized feedback from participants, partners, employers and community members who experienced last year's pilot to refine the summer program, offer more opportunities and increase learning outcomes and career connections. PITTSYLV AN I A COUNTY EXPER IE NC EW O RK S 2022 LAST YEAR'S SUCCESS Provided 15 summer internships for PCS students. Collaborated with 6 Pittsylvania County offices, and 2 Pittsylvania County School departments to create opportunities. Made $2800 in stipend payments directly to each student participant. Created a platform for young people to positively expand their professional and personal networks. P ITTS Y LV A N IA CO UN TY EXPERIENCEWORKS 2022 2022 GOALS •Expand programs beyond the summer to provide comprehensive work -based learning opportunities. •Increase the number of Pittsylvania County youth served. •Create and implement more intentional processes to improve student preparedness. •Offer a wider variety of internship experiences to support business/industry. •Increase community outreach and recruitment to improve program accessibility. •Provide greater individualized support for interns throughout the process. P ITTS Y LV A N IA CO UN TY E X P E R IE N CE WOR KS 2 0 2 2 PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS Thanks to the great outcomes from the 2021 program, the IALR team secured additional funding from GO Virginia 3 and the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission to support the ExperienceWorks framework, which organizes a work -based learning ecosystem throughout the region. We increased the number of internship placements for students from 15 to 30. Student stipends increased to minimum wage ($11/hr). Pittsylvania County School faculty will be contracted to work with students throughout the summer during their Friday debriefs. Listening to feedback from students, we shortened the length of the work -readiness bootcamp and moved it to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. P ITTS Y LVANIA COUNTY E X P E R IE NCE WOR KS 2 0 2 2 AspHIRE Mock Interview Day is a collaboration with Pittsylvania County Schools and the business community as interviewers. The EXCITE : Exploring Careers Through Industry Teacher Externships program provides opportunities for PCS teachers to work in local businesses for a few days over the summer. Sector -focused camps are specific to an industry. A sector camp in LOCAL GOVERNMENT can help youth understand opportunities within local government.
