HISTORY:
•Pittsylvania County Community Action began in 1964 after the signing
of the Economic Opportunity Act by President Lyndon Johnson
•Is assigned as the designated Community Action Agency for the cities of Danville and
Martinsville, Virginia and the counties of Henry and Pittsylvania, with a Head Start
program located in Campbell County, Virginia.
•Currently operates ten major programs :
•Head Start, Weatherization, Virginia CARES, Senior Program, Project
Discovery, Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8), Housing Opportunity for
People with AIDS HOPWA), Virginia TAX Assistance Program (VITA), Summer Feeding
for Kids, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
•Funding to support programs are received from Department of Housing and
Community Development, Older American ACT, Virginia Department of Justice,
Community Development Block Grant, City of Danville, Pittsylvania County.
•Partners/Collaboration with the Department of Social Services (Danville and
Pittsylvania), Pittsylvania and Danville County Sheriff Departments, Piedmont
Access to Health Services (PATHS), Pittsylvania County School System,
Danville/ Pittsylvania County Health Departments… among many

barriers, gain self-sufficiency, and
improve quality of life.”

A school readiness program that enhances the cognitive,
social, emotional and physical development of children.
Serve 242 children in 13 classrooms
All Centers are licensed by the Virginia Department of
Social Services

particularly for the elderly, people with disabilities, and

Virginia CARES
•Assists newly released ex-offenders
(along with their families) in making a
successful transition from prison back
to their community(s).
•Obtain an MOU with Pittsylvania
County Jails to provide:
•Training to inmates that are
within 90 days of being
released to reenter the
community;
•Provide training on Family
Reunification, securing driving
permits, and assistance with
voting rights application,
•Job Skill training, job search,
completion of job application,
•Assist with basic necessities
such as rental and utility
assistance;
•
HOPWA
•Provide resources to help clients maintain
housing stability, avoid homelessness, and
improve access to HIV/AIDS treatment and
related care while placing a greater
emphasis on permanent supportive
housing.
