Uranium Mining - General AssemblyPITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESOLUTION 2007-12-85 VIRGINIA: At an adjourned meeting of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, the following resolution was presented and adopted requesting the Commonwealth of Virginia to develop a neutral comprehensive legislative study on mining of uranium: WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, has been identified as an area of the Commonwealth that may contain heavy deposits of uranium which could be mined to provide an alternative fuel source for the Commonwealth of Virginia; and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors is concerned about bringing jobs, economic growth, and a higher standard of living to the people of Southside, while trying to protect the intrinsic value of a clean environment, conservation, and historic preservation to help maintain the current standard of living enjoyed by the citizens of Pittsylvania County; and WHEREAS, the County of Pittsylvania supports the development of alternative fuels to decrease the reliance on foreign sources of energy; and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors recognizes that there may be potential harmful impacts from the mining of uranium; and THEN BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors on the behalf of the all of the citizens of Pittsylvania County requests the General Assembly to develop a neutral and comprehensive legislative study that takes into account all relative factors in deciding whether it is possible to mine uranium safely in Pittsylvania County and the Commonwealth of Virginia; and FURTHER, that the Board of Supervisors requests the General Assembly to closely monitor the proposed study to ensure that it meets the long-term interests of the County of Pittsylvania and the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as the protection of the citizens and our environment; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, a copy of this Resolution be presented to our local representatives of the General Assembly for the 2008 session.
