2009-10-08-Altavista JournalPITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESOLUTION 2009-10-08 VIRGINIA: At the adjourned meeting of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors held in the General District Courtroom of the Edwin R. Shields Courthouse Addition on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, the following resolution was presented and adopted: WHEREAS, the Altavista Journal was first published on October 23, 1909 in Altavista, Virginia; and WHEREAS, C. H. Edwards' family took over the Altavista Journal in 1919 providing a community based relationship covering activities of Altavista, Campbell County and northern Pittsylvania County, as well as providing news and interesting editorials to the citizens of that area; and WHEREAS, R. J. Edwards took over the company in 1930 and his wife, Pauline Edwards worked as the operation and the mainstay of the Altavista Journal until the paper was purchased by Womack Publishing in 1990; and WHEREAS, Charles Edwards began with the Altavista Journal in 1963 starting as a pressman and doing the accompanying commercial operation, as well as covering the courts and general news, built this newspaper up to a substantial circulation in Campbell County and northern Pittsylvania County in excess of 5,000 copies; and WHEREAS, Charles Van Womack purchased the Altavista Journal in 1990 and has provided continual coverage to the citizens of Altavista, Campbell County and northern Pittsylvania County with local news, editorials and sports coverage, now with a circulation of 6,100; then BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors congratulate the staff and owners of the Altavista Journal for 100 years of service to the citizens of Campbell County and northern Pittsylvania County and wish them well into their future successful growth and continued service. AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be presented to the Editor, Mark Thomas, at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2009.
