2011-01-03 Staunton River Bridge-Altavista PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESOLUTION 2011-01-03 VIRGINIA: AT THE RE-ORANIZATIONAL MEETING OF THE PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HELD ON MONDAY, JANUARY 03, 2011, IN THE GENERAL DISTRICT COURTROOM OF THE EDWIN R. SHIELDS COURTHOUSE ADDITION IN CHATHAM, VIRGINIA, THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS PRESENTED AND ADOPTED: WHEREAS, the Town of Hurt and the Town of Altavista are very close in proximity and a number of pedestrians walk between the two towns when facilities were availale; and WHEREAS, there is a pedestrian walkway along the Staunton River Bridge on U.S. Business 29, between the Town of Hurt and the Town of Altavista; and WHEREAS, this pedestrian walkway provided the availability of citizens to walk between these two jurisdictions and enjoy the amenities of each town without having to provide additional traffic on U.S. Business 29 with vehicles; and WHEREAS, the Town of Altavista and the County of Campbell have put significant dollars into recreational facilities along the Staunton River and in the Town of Altavista where pedestrian traffic from northern Pittsylvania County and the Town of Hurt could readily access if the pedestrian walkway on U.S. Business 29 was open to pedestrian traffic; then THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors requests that the Virginia Department of Transportation consider the necessary upgrades and repairs to the pedestrian walkway on the Staunton River Bridge to re-open it for pedestrian use; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Lynchburg District Office of the Virginia Department of Transportation for their review and consideration.
