2015-09-01 October 2015 Agribusiness Grant Program Application PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING SUBMISSION OF THE OCTOBER 2015 AGRIBUSINESS GRANT PROGRAM APPLICATION TO THE TOBACCO COMMISSION FOR PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY,VIRGINIA RESOLUTION 2015-9-01 At the regular meeting of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors held in the General District Courtroom in Chatham, Virginia on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, the following resolution was presented and adopted. WHEREAS, Virginia now ranks fifth in the nation for wine and vineyard production units with our US Congressman, Robert Hurt, representing more wineries than any other US Congressman in the nation;and WHEREAS, the Virginia wine industry, as a whole, is experiencing a significant wine grape shortage in excess of one thousand acres;and WHEREAS,the installation of new vineyards is an expensive venture requiring skilled labor for tying, pruning and harvesting along with many capital assets associated with most farming operations; and WHEREAS,the Southside footprint of the Tobacco Commission, including all 20 counties, with our long heritage of fanning, much lower land costs, and land availability could benefit from a dedicated cost-share program to encourage the continued traditions established on our farms by diversifying their income streams to include vineyard production;then BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Pittsylvania County confirms that it supports this proposed cost-share grant application to the Tobacco Commission and agrees that expanded and diversified fanning operations benefit the citizenry of Pittsylvania County;and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Pittsylvania County authorizes the submission of a grant application by Pittsylvania County to the Agribusiness Grant Program of the Tobacco Commission and authorizes the County Administrator to review, approve and file this application and all necessary correspondence relating to the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission required by this grant; and BE IT STILL FURTHER RESOLVED, that in the event that the Tobacco Commission Agribusiness Grant Program is approved, that Pittsylvania County will serve as the required local fiscal agent for the grant with the clear understanding that no local matching funds will be required from Pittsylvania County and that no financial liability will be assumed by the County.
