RESOLUTION
2015 -03 -03
VIRGINIA: At an adjourned meeting of the Board of Supervisors of Pittsylvania
County, Virginia, held in the General District Courtroom of the Edwin R. Shields Courthouse
Addition in Chatham, Virginia on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, the following resolution was
presented and adopted:
WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County, as the largest landmass county in the Commonwealth
of Virginia, is by nature a very rural county; and
WHEREAS, farming and farm enterprises have historically been the root of the
County's economic success; and
WHEREAS, farming in the County generates nearly $1 billion dollars in economic
impact and employees nearly 7,000 persons on a yearly basis; and
WHEREAS, Agriculture and Forestry are the Commonwealth of Virginia's largest
industries; and
WHEREAS, the County's geographic location, climate, utility services, road and rail
infrastructure, soils, and farmer expertise are uniquely poised to support new and emerging
agriculture enterprises; and
WHEREAS, the County applied for and received a Planning Grant from the Governor's
Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund to study the feasibility and impacts of
locating a vertically integrated poultry operation to the County, which demonstrated the
substantial, positive economic development benefits that would accrue to the County and region;
and
WHEREAS, the County Board of Supervisors has supported the farming community in
the past through numerous resolutions in favor of agriculturally related projects; then
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Pittsylvania County,
Virginia, fully supports the continued efforts of the farming community and the County's Office
of Agribusiness Development to encourage the diversification of our farm enterprises by
engaging with vertically integrated agricultural operators along with independent agribusinesses,
to more fully promote commercial development that promotes job opportunities and enhances
tax revenue in Pittsylvania County.
