DROUGHT DISASTER DECLARATION
VIRGINIA: At the Business Meeting of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors on October
15, 2019, in the General District Courtroom of the Edwin R. Shields Courthouse Addition, the following
Resolution was presented and adopted:
WHEREAS, though Spring rains were plentiful and widely received, drought conditions have been
forming since June in Pittsylvania County, Virginia(the "County"); and
WHEREAS,the frequency of rainfall and the amount received have rapidly diminished with many areas
of the County having been 30-45 days since the last effective rainfall event. The coupling of inadequate rainfall
and high heat conditions have created a detrimental drought condition in the County; and
WHEREAS,additionally, data from the National Weather Service indicates that the County is in drought
conditions; and
WHEREAS, due to these continually deteriorating conditions, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Farm
Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service Staff Members met Thursday, September 19,2019,
to conduct an initial estimate of crop losses due to the environmental condition currently being experienced by
County producers. This body,also known as the Pittsylvania Food and Agriculture Committee, feels that adverse
weather conditions warrant a Drought Disaster Declaration,then
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors declare
a disaster area in the County due to the extreme drought, and petition the Honorable Ralph S.Northam, Governor
of the Commonwealth of Virginia,to declare the County a disaster area due to the extreme drought conditions to
provide the means for those affected to qualify for any available relief assistance; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to Governor Northam
respectfully requesting that he forward this Resolution to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the County's
behalf.
