2015 Pittsylvania County Community Action 50th Anniversary itto t�1 � p auta County Noarb of Ouperbtooro Vroctaruactiou Pittsylvania County Community Action 50th Anniversary WHEREAS, President Lyndon Johnson declared an unconditional war on poverty and signed into law the Economic Opportunity Act August 20, 1964, establishing that a network of local organizations be developed that would work with communities to eliminate conditions what would cause poverty; and WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County Community Action agency began its work under the leadership of Irvin Burton who spear-headed the cooperation between the Pittsylvania County schools, the Pittsylvania County government and the citizens of the community to begin the development of the Pittsylvania County Community Action agency; and WHEREAS, Mr. Clyde Banks, Mr. Irvin Burton, along with Jesse Clark, Albert Pippet, and William Turner, the Board of Directors,hired Mr. Robert Dirk as the first executive director of PCCA; and WHEREAS, since its founding, there have been four other executive directors for Pittsylvania ania Co y unt y Community Action; Mr. Kenneth Thorson, Reverend Charles Miller, Mr. Sherman Saunders, and currently Ms. Everlena Ross is the Interim Executive Director; and WHEREAS, the Pittsylvania County Community Action, Incorporated is celebrating 50 years of services to the citizens of Pittsylvania County, has hired over 160 employees, and agency components have doubled in size and operations; and WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County Community Action, Incorporated is a multi jurisdictional agency, now serving Pittsylvania County, the City of Danville, the City of Martinsville and Henry County, providing continued awareness about poverty and providing comprehensive approaches to eliminating conditions that cause that poverty; then BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors that they commend both the past representatives of Pittsylvania County Community Action, Incorporated and the current Board and employees of Pittsylvania County Community Action, Incorporated for the outstanding job they have done over 50 years, providing improvements to the communities of Southside Virginia and jobs to those who have been providing guidance and leadership to the elimination of poverty in Pittsylvania County, Danville, Martinsville and Henry County, and wishing those employees and the Board of Directors success in their future endeavors that provide service to their community; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors declared September 17, 2015 as Pittsylvania County Community Action Day and authorize the County Administrator to forward a copy of this proclamation to the local media.
