10-15-2024 Joint Meeting with School Board - FINAL PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ JOINT MEETING WITH SCHOOL BOARD October 15, 2024 VIRGINIA: The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors' ("Board") Joint Meeting with the School Board was held on October 15, 2024, in the Board Meeting Room, 39 Bank Street, SE, Chatham, Virginia 24531. CALL TO ORDER (3:00 PM) Dalton called the Meeting to Order at 3:00 PM. ROLL CALL The following Board Members were present: Darrell W. Dalton - Callands-Gretna District Robert M. Tucker, Jr. - Banister District Kenneth L. Bowman - Chatham-Blairs District Timothy W. Dudley – Staunton River District Eddie L. Hite, Jr. - Dan River District William V. (“Vic”) Ingram - Tunstall District Murray W. Whittle - Westover District The following School Board Members were present: Calvin D. Doss – Chairman, Callands-Gretna District Kelly H. Merricks – Vice-Chair, Dan River District Mark R. Shields – Chatham-Blairs District Willie T. Fitzgerald – Banister District Kevin W. Mills – Westover District Don C. School Division's Presentation/Discussion Dr. Mark Jones, Superintendent of Pittsylvania County Schools, discussed expanding middle school sports programs, including potential new fields for baseball, softball, and football. Dr. Mark Jones presented various construction plans, estimating a high-end cost of $12.5 million. The board also considered a sports complex to accommodate multiple sports and community events, with potential economic benefits. They reviewed the use of sales tax referendum funds, totaling $65 million over 20 years, for school improvements like roofs, HVAC, and security vestibules. Concerns about air conditioning in school buses and the impact of a data center on local water resources were also raised, but there was clarification that the data center will use city water, which should not affect local wells.
