Virginia Litter Facts
•Nearly 3.5 million taxpayer dollars are spent each year to
clean up litter on Virginia’s roadways
•More than half of roadway litter comes from motorists and
another 25% is from pedestrians
•Significant roadway litter comes from vehicles with
improperly covered loads
•Nearly three-fourths of litter comes from people
consciously choosing to litter on Virginia’s roads

VDOT provides supplies and pick ups the bagged trash
Each year, more than 23,000 Adopt-a-Highway volunteers collect
more than 44,000 bags of waste along Virginia’s highways.
Currently 27 roads are adopted in Pittsylvania County

A. Rural portions of Interstate highways, including access ramps, except rest areas open to the public, and within 50 yards of commercial facilities (such as, gas stations, motels, stores) and/or homes at interchanges.
B. Along rural portions of primary and secondary highways and roads except in villages, subdivisions or within 50 yards of any built-up area(s) (for example, crossroads or intersections with gas stations, convenience stores, homes).
C. Any other state-maintained road that meets the requirements of items A and B above and does not otherwise violate the provision of the section on prohibited work areas and does not jeopardize public safety.

Considerations
FY22 VDOT paid $30,000 for Landfill tipping fees
If those fees were waived, then VDOT could do an extra
round of pickup to possibly include Supervisor suggested roads
Waived fees would not include tires or special projects.
Memorandum of Agreement between Sheriff’s Office and VDOT for
payment of deputy to supervise local inmates
Direct court-ordered community service
Extend initiative to civic organizations
