The History of Cats
Cats have lived primarily outdoors alongside humans, sharing the
environment with birds and wildlife, for over 10,000 years.
Community cats have always lived outdoors and have a place in
the natural landscape.
Only since 1947, with the invention of kitty litter, has it become
common for cats to live indoor Alley Cat

Where are they all coming from?
The cats that we see out and about Pittsylvania County are a combination of feral (wild) cats, abandoned cats, and free roaming owned cats.
Usually unvaccinated, and allowed to reproduce.
The average litter is 4 kittens. Cats can start having litters as early as four months of age, and can have three litters per year.

Community Cats (Feral) are wild
Feral cats are wild animals who typically avoid human interaction. Feral
cats are happier outdoors in their own territory—they have their own hierarchies and are able to exhibit their natural behaviors

Historical Approach
From 2013 –to 2018 the Danville Humane Society and Pittsylvania
County shelter took in 16,485 cats and euthanized approximately
13,000 cats.
We estimate that approximately 26,000 cats have been euthanized
in the past 10 years

A problem that can’t be Ignored
Virginia Code does not require
cats to be picked up unless they
are sick, injured or imminent
danger.
A growing problem:
•Between 1/1/19 and 11/11/19 the
Pet Center alone has received 900
cats. Majority owere kittens born
from unaltered Community cats.
•If a Community Cat (Feral) is
picked up by Animal Control, we
are required to hold the cat for a
minimum of 3 days.

TNR: A Humane Solution
▪In practice for decades in the US after being proven in Europe
▪Scientific studies show that Trap-Neuter-Return improves the lives of
feral cats and decreases the size of colonies over time.
▪The TNR Process:
▪Cats are humanely trapped and taken to a veterinarian to be neutered
and vaccinated.
▪After recovery, the cats are returned to their home—their colony—
outdoors.
▪Kittens and cats who are friendly and socialized to people may be
adopted into homes.
