RESOLUTION
2007-09-70
WHEREAS, the Altavista Emergency Medical Service began operation in May of 1946,
as the Altavista Lifesaving and Rescue Crew, Incorporated, being one of the first organized
rescue squads in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Honorable Dr. James P. Kent, Sr. was one of the coordinators who helped
establish this, along with the Piedmont Hospital that served the northern part of Pittsylvania
County for a number of years; and
WHEREAS, the Altavista Lifesaving and Rescue Crew moved to new headquarters in
1982 and expanded their services further into Pittsylvania County with a fleet of five ambulances
and two rescue vehicles, crash truck and a rapid response vehicle, making them one of the largest
rescue squads serving Pittsylvania County north of White Oak Mountain; and
WHEREAS, the Altavista Emergency Medical Service has provided 24-hour emergency
medical service to southwestern Campbell County and the corporated towns of Altavista and Hurt
and the northern parts of Pittsylvania County and some sections of Bedford for 60 years; then
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors
commend the Altavista Emergency Medical Services for their continued 60-year service to the
citizens of Pittsylvania County and congratulate them on this worthy accomplishment; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, a copy of this resolution be presented to the
Altavista Emergency Medical Services on behalf of the citizens of Pittsylvania County.
