RESOLUTION 2009-03- 03
WHEREAS, the Coal and Energy Commission Study Group is holding a public
hearing in Richmond, Virginia, on March 24, 2009 and is continuing to accept questions and
comments on the prospect of uranium mining in the Commonwealth of Virginia and
Pittsylvania County specifically; and
AND WHEREAS, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors has an abiding and
continuing interest and a duty to protect the safety and well being of its constituents by
resolving to obtain a fair and objective study produced from the efforts of the Study Group;
and
WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors has, on February 17, 2009, unanimously
adopted a Resolution calling for no damage to the Citizens of Pittsylvania County, its
businesses, institutions and environment from uranium mining as opposed to a cost/benefit
approach or accepting minimized damages, thereby expressing the Board's policy of zero
tolerance for hazards resulting from uranium mining; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors is resolved to do all within its power to protect
the health, safety and general welfare of the Citizens of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and
thus condemns any mining practice lacking in empirical data or resulting in experimentation
with the health, safety and general welfare of the Citizens of Pittsylvania County.
THEREFORE, Be It Hereby Resolved that the Board of Supervisors requests that
the said Study Group not accept as evidence of the availability of safe uranium mining
practices any experimental or unproven mining practices, or evidence of mining practices in
environmental, demographical, topographical, geographical and meteorological
environmental conditions inconsistent with those at the proposed Pittsylvania County mine
site.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors directs that a copy of
this Resolution be presented to the Coal and Energy Commission Study Group on behalf of
the Board of Supervisors and Citizens of Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
