WHEREAS, Virginia now ranks fifth in the nation for wine and vineyard production units with
our US Congressman, Robert Hurt, representing more wineries than any other US Congressman in the
nation;and
WHEREAS, the Virginia wine industry, as a whole, is experiencing a significant wine grape

tying, pruning and harvesting along with many capital assets associated with most farming operations;
and
WHEREAS,the Southside footprint of the Tobacco Commission, including all 20 counties, with
our long heritage of fanning, much lower land costs, and land availability could benefit from a dedicated
cost-share program to encourage the continued traditions established on our farms by diversifying their
income streams to include vineyard production;then
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Pittsylvania County confirms
that it supports this proposed cost-share grant application to the Tobacco Commission and agrees that
expanded and diversified fanning operations benefit the citizenry of Pittsylvania County;and
