RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF AN APPLICATION FOR THE FY 2019
TOBACCO COMMISSION REASEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT LAST MILE
BROADBAND GRANT PROGRAM FOR THE MEC/EMPOWER FIBER
EXTENSION PROJECT
WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County, Virginia (the "County") has been impacted by
the decline of the tobacco industry causing a negative impact on economic development
and growth throughout the County, and
WHEREAS, the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission (the "Tobacco
Commission") has developed a Last Mile Broadband Grant Program to assist in
constructing last-mile broadband telecommunication infrastructure in unserved areas of
the Tobacco Region to help tobacco-related localities to change and revitalize their
economies, and
WHEREAS, grants from the Tobacco Commission will assist the County in
transforming its economy to replace the decline in the tobacco agri-business community
through the expansion of broadband internet access; then
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Pittsylvania
County, Virginia (the "Board"), fully supports the Grant Application to the FY2019
Research and Development Last Mile Broadband Grant Program for a partnership with
Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative/Empower to extend its fiber optic system in the
County and provide broadband internet service in the County and authorizes the County
Administrator to execute the Application on behalf of the Board and meet the
requirements of the Grant and its administration.
