RESOLUTION
2018-07-03
VIRGINIA: At the business meeting of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors held in the General
District Courtroom of the Edwin R. Shields Courthouse Addition in Chatham, Virginia on Tuesday, July
17, 2018, the following resolution was presented and adopted:
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Transportation developed the Smart Scale process to
score and prioritize transportation projects and allocate construction funding; and
WHEREAS, the Smart Scale process is based on an application system whereby eligible
applicants submit applications for projects that are determined to be both in the public interest and
in compliance with VDOT’s identified transportation needs and eligibility criteria; and
WHEREAS, Pittsylvania County is an eligible applicant and has prepared and submitted
applications for the following transportation improvement projects in 2018:
• Route 640, Wards Road, roadway improvements to bring road into compliance with
current standards
• Route 40 and McBride Lane Intersection, improvements to increase safety and support
a growing healthcare and commercial area
• U.S. Route 29 and Route 642, Shula Drive, intersection modifications, including a new R-
Cut design, to address a significant accident history
• Route 729, Kentuck Road, and Ringgold West Industrial Park, intersection and access
improvements to address an increase in truck traffic associated with an expanded
distribution center; and
WHEREAS, these projects are in the public interest and will benefit both the travelling public
and the residents of Pittsylvania County; then
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors endorses and
supports the Smart Scale applications listed herein and respectfully requests support for these projects
form the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
